Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
3.0
June is incredibly relatable. She has a bunch of trauma she hasn't worked through; she's an anxious mess with an intense need for validation and acclaim; she does Not want to be an accountant! She is a morally reprehensible person. Athena is everything one could aspire to be. She is also a shitty person. There are no good people here, and yet there are also no cartoonishly evil people here. This is my first R.F. Kuang novel, and I must admit I was sceptical due to the reputation. I'm glad I read it though, as Kuang provides a refreshingly nuanced narrative.
I must admit I was secretly hoping June *was* losing her mind at the end, but that's the horror junkie in me speaking.
Finally, as important as these conversations are, I'm a little saddened the book will be aged almost instantly by the intense dependence on social media, but I cannot think of any way around it. Not all books are meant to be timeless classics, I suppose.
