The Warrior Moon by K. Arsenault Rivera

5.0

An incredible journey.

I describe the first book of the series as a lesbian romance with a high fantasy backdrop. The romance comes first and the setting is a cool bonus.

In the final book, the seeds of world building that Rivera planted blossom into a rich, dark world of gods and demons. All of the foreshadowing and hints to magic and power bear fruit as the heroines' quest reaches its apex.

Still though the flowery prose of the romance winds its way though the story. If that's not your thing, the book might be long winded at times. But the romantic lesbian in me still flutters every time Shefali and Shizuka make eye contact and their love is laid out over the course of a paragraph.

The added perspectives of new characters was welcome, though I found I was less invested in Sakura's story.
