Battle Royale by Koushun Takami

5.0

This book really was stunning. Like many, I heard about it after I had read The Hunger Games - and I am so glad I did. This is not the place to say which I preferred, but I adored Battle Royale. The amount of detail and background information was possibly one of my favourite things about it: when I started I had no idea how I was going to keep track of 42 students, but Takami made it easy by giving everyone a real story, with real emotional depth to go with it.
The violence was horrific, and as it should be. The whole idea is horrific, and to do anything that wasn't as terrifying would be a disservice to the idea. I haven't seen the movie and often stay well clear from horror and slasher films (and as a total gore-wimp reading this book was sometimes hard - but it was so worth it. And as mentioned, it couldn't have been written any other way. This book reminds us that, most the time, there is nothing peaceful, simple, nor easy about death).
My the particular edition I got I also got an extra interview with Takami from 2009, which was super interesting.
Highly recommended to anyone who likes dystopian fiction, battle fiction, or enjoyed THG.
