The Beekeeper: Rescuing the Stolen Women of Iraq by Dunya Mikhail

5.0

This is a stunning book and a beautiful one. It is the story of horrific violence perpetrated by Daesh against women men and children. It is also the story of an extraordinary man, Abdullah, a Yazidi (former)beekeeper who dedicates is life to rescuing women who are being imprisoned and raped by Daesh. Dunya Mikhail is a courageous witness who takes down the stories and commits herself to bearing the unbearable, speaking truth that is searingly unflinching and devastating. What makes it possible to bear witness is finding some hope: hope in the heroism and generosity of rescuers and survivors and those who risked their lives to save lives. Mikhail’s telling amplified the humanity of each person. The preservation of
These stories, the telling of them, is also a rescue.
