The Late Americans by Brandon Taylor
2.0

Months ago, I heard an interview of Brandon Taylor on the local NPR station and put myself on the wait list for his new book. I ended up with the audio book and found myself moving up the playback speed to 1.5, 1.75 and 2.0x just to get the pain over.

Like John Doerr, Taylor is a talented writer -- he writes lots of descriptions but it's mostly repetitive: bad sex, petty squabbles, apathetic ruminations of a heap of people distinctly lacking in self-awareness. Mostly - it's boring. I can only spend so much time listening to charming descriptions of tedious topics. The sex is awful - it's like he's making intentionally cringe-inducing.

The mismatched gay couples are not even arguing about anything particularly meaningful or interesting. They just bicker. Nobody in this book seems to have any self-confidence, self-awareness or motivation. I'm not sure this is new for college students but it doesn't make for interesting reading.
