Sweeping, yet intimate

A wonderful multi-generational story that has both detachment and terrific intimacy. The characters are well-developed, but in miniature - you feel snippets of them, but it's enough to paint a full, rich picture. There is both fatalism and hope, predetermination and free will. Above all, it is a work of deep humanity.
