Summerwater by Sarah Moss
4.0

Feel that this book should carry as its sub-title - the well known words of Tolstoy"...every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way"

Holiday parks already conjure up the realities of family summers in constant rain compared to the expectations of sugar coated delight. Moss captures every detail so well of the characters "enjoying" their break in remote tatty cabins observing each other and us observing them. She has such a delicate hand with how very British these places are. Because nobody is introduced they don't interact, so instead of conversing or asking names, identifiers and insights are constructed from behaviour...the old guy, the lad with the red kayak, hippy mum, girl on pink bike etc.

The whole story had a lurking unease about it mirroring the unappealing damp and yet, it is funny. It is comic in the sit-com nature of all being thrown together somewhere beautiful, yet the rain won't stop. There they are, on their holidays, determined (or not) to have a good time in a place where facilities are worse than home and there is no wi-fi. You can almost sense the author chuckling to herself as she penned this "What could possibly go wrong?"
