My Dear Hamilton: A Novel of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton
by Laura Kamoie, Stephanie Dray
Actual rating is 3.75 stars. I enjoyed the audio narration, but this was a long listen. Still, it held my interest. For being a book about Mrs. Hamilton, it mostly revolves around her husband. The author’s note explains that a bit when they mention that there wasn’t much original source material from Eliza Hamilton to be able to paint a clear picture. As a result, most of what is relayed is inferred based on historical events, accounts of others from the time, and the insight of women writing about another woman. There were inferences that were made to tell the story that seem plausible and really brought this amazing lady to life.
I watched the musical “Hamilton” on Disney+ about halfway through the audiobook to see how the two tellings varied from one another, comparing his story to hers. Obviously the writers of both took liberties, but it was no less fascinating, especially as we got to know other historical figures through the book as well. Really well done!
