Complicated and old-fashioned story that treats the reader as an intelligent being. Quite gloomy but I get the impression Britain in the 50s or early 60s was gloomy. Very cynical outlook on the Secret Service and the coldheartedness on both sides. There is an interesting twist but I found the ending (without giving too much away) a bit obvious, although because of that I wasn't expecting it (if you see what I mean!). I have never read a 'spy' novel before, although I am aware of Le Carre through film and tv, and I enjoyed it immensely. What I though this writer does brilliantly is paint a picture with a few words. I recommend this read to anyone, but make sure you are in a 'happy place' when you read it as there is nothing upbeat about it!
