The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
5.0

What a way to end the semester: a bunch of fun, thoughtful, and engaging stories about Sherlock Holmes and Watson, a bunch of mysteries to solve that seem unsolvable until Sherlock reveals his vision, some light reading after the pile of long narratives that made up the most of the semester. They remind me a lot of modern day cop shows (or maybe it should be the other way around) in that all of the stories are variations on a formula.

Sherlock Holmes himself is as entertaining as any character I came across this semester, as his brilliance is as amusing as his contempt for Scotland Yard. Watson, who can't keep up with his brilliance either, doesn't get the abuse the authorities do, but he's a mainstay in the stories--the others aren't. One of these every so often would be a lot of fun to read.
