The Night Circus
by Erin Morgenstern
Even though I read this book 3 years ago (this week), I remember it vividly. I remember all of the beautiful imagery of the night circus, it's black and white with splashes of red color scheme. The interesting characters in the circus, and the neighborhood boy drawn in by its charms.
And then I tried to remember its plot. The rival magicians and their two protégés, and the weird society of magicians. Oh yes, I remember . . . being confused. And thinking that it didn't make that much sense. And then finishing and wondering why all of the weird plot loose ends and the bizarre ending.
Oh yes, the book was huge on atmosphere, but very weak on plot. The characters were vividly drawn in their physical descriptions, but nonsensical in their actions and not that distinguishable in their personalities. On the whole, this book was much more window dressing than satisfying.
