Finders Keepers by Stephen King
3.0
I didn't realize until about 100 pages in that this was the second book in a trilogy. However, by that time, I was too far into the story to backpeddle. "Finders Keepers" is set up in four parts - "Buried Treasure," "Old Pals," "Peter and the Wolf," and an epilogue. "Buried Treasure" is the set up and has only brief references to the first book, "Mr. Mercedes."
In "Old Pals," the story shifts. This is where the titular Bill Hodges enters the story; the events of "Finders Keepers" occurring parallel in time with the events of "Mr. Mercedes." However, his involvement in the lives of Pete Saubers and Morris Bellamy are not immediately revealed. The second part of the story feels like it should be the first. After the momentum of "Buried Treasure," "Old Pals" hits the brakes. This section of the book is almost painfully slow, especially compared to the action of the first and third parts.
"Peter and the Wolf," however, returns to the same tempo of the first part and is much more captivating.
In all, a decent read. Not one of my favorites of King's work and I am not sure, from this second book that I am chomping at the bit to read "Mr. Mercedes" or "End of Watch." Maybe one day.
