This book works perfectly on its own, so if you want to read a dang good sci-fi book about a kid attending "space school," then read it. It's a sci-fi classic in my opinion.
However, if you find yourself, as I did, thinking about the story for years after, reading it over and over again and wondering how the story continues, then good news. You just found your new favorite sci-fi book series. The sequel is nothing like the first; it's better. Orson Scott Card was not a good man, but the first two books in this series are near perfect and should be celebrated.
