The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison

5.0

This book was beautiful and devastating. Be warned, I am giving you trigger warnings galore. If you read the description and are leaning toward not being able to deal with it, don't read this book.

If you can deal with it, it's dark and lovely. Everything in it is wrong, but it's a great little piece of storytelling. Dot Hutchison caught my attention early on, and kept it through her entire story. Disgusting and horrible things happen in this book, but it is well-crafted, and as tasteful as this situation could possibly be.

I am always grateful for layered characters - this was a bunch of girls grouped together, but Hutchison gives them distinct personalities. I love Maya - I found myself relating to her personality and admiring her strength. Even though Maya doesn't care about much (especially what people think of her), she is a great female role model.

This book made me reflect upon the importance of female friendships. Women's relationships are what hold the characters in this book together, and Hutchison writes it in a real way - it's not cheesy or sappy; just genuinely caring for others and being okay with who they are.

I would definitely read another Hutchison book. I enjoyed the story. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.
