Caps for Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business by Esphyr Slobodkina
5.0
When I was asked to think of favorite childhood books, even from as young as 10 years old, I always came back to this one. I’ve always loved this story, partly because of the simple illustrations and the silliness of it all. I loved animal books as a kid, and though the monkeys don’t speak in [b:Caps for Sale|775597|Caps for Sale A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business|Esphyr Slobodkina|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1348541342l/775597._SX50_.jpg|954532], they do have a distinct (combined) personality and act as important characters or at least plot points. I’ve always loved the “tsz tsz tsz” that the monkeys say because it’s so un-monkeylike. It’s just pure silliness in a lot of ways.
This is a simple story that will engage young children, but can also be used to address ideas such as colors, feelings, or actions and consequences.

While it's not among the types books that I've been categorizing as new favorite children's books these days, I'd still love to see it in my classroom in the future as long as I can teach my students to work past difficulties. It would be a fun read aloud to get students to think about feelings, as well about actions and consequences. And hey, maybe it doesn't even have to be a read-aloud with a purpose, as long as it is enjoyable to the audience.
