The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm
by Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm
The influence of the Brothers Grimm on fairytales can’t be understated, to the point where their reputation vastly exceeds their collection as a whole. The classics are classics for a reason—“Briar Rose” (i.e. Sleeping Beauty) and “Snow White” were standouts for me along with the lesser known “King Thrushbeard”—but overall, these stories are redundant. When they find something they like, they repeat it to death. To an extent, this is understandable (there’s only so much you can do with quick morality tales), but after some 500+ pages of little variation, they start to feel like fortune cookies.
