The Tides Between Us by Cali Melle
1.0
fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I'm not deaf but I asked people in the Deaf community about this book and they agreed that it seemed like the author put 0 thought into writing a Deaf character. Even I, who am not Deaf and don't know anyone who is, could tell that the FMC's deafness was very poorly written.
Also, the MMC learns sign language for her and he not only has a hearing tutor, but he somehow becomes proficient at ASL in just a few weeks/months. That's, if not impossible, highly improbable. ASL is a language, a complex language with it's own rules and I highly doubt he would have been able to become fluent in just a few weeks. I've tried learning new languages, I'm good at learning new languages, and I just can't see how he became so good in such a short time.
The characters had zero depth and zero character development. And nothing happened the whole book. I'm usually up for a good palate cleanser where nothing happens, but in this book nothing happens and it's boring. At least it's short, so you won't be bored for long.
And as much as the FMC's brother is painted as a good and caring older brother, the truth is he is an ableist, overbearing, condescending asshole.
And the writing is very poor. A highschooler could write a better book.
I was reading everyone's reviews and couldn't stop thinking, did we read the same book?
This is the fourth book I've read by this author and I haven't liked any of them. I decided to give this one a chance because I thought it was original. However, this has turned out to be the worst book I've read all year (and I've read more that 100 books this year and it's only April, so that's saying something).
I hope you read this review and save yourself from reading this awful book.
I usually reserve 1 star reviews for books that are deeply morally wrong (I'm looking at you After with your romanticizing rape and toxic relationships while marketing to teenage girls), but the representation and everything else in this book is so terrible that it has earned the 1 star.
