The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

Ok. I see a lot of negative reviews here on Goodreads but I am prepared to call this a new classic the likes of Peter Pan, Narnia, Neverending Story, and His Dark Materials (which I remember disliking its resolution). Often I find a book has a great idea for a beginning but falls apart in the resolution so I was worried about this one, but quite the opposite - it went in unexpected, modern directions, connecting our modern world with a fairy tale world - not following the storyline you think it's headed through, but also not disappointing you with a failed attempt to break from the expected.

This author can write. It is chock-full of the most succulent similes. I've never thought very highly of similes before - clearly the "red-headed stepsister" of the clearly superior Metaphor. But these similes were so perfect, so illustrious and fresh, they really helped bring the story to brimming life.

I enjoyed the complex characters.

I am enchanted to think of a future where we learn what's been happening with Finch.
