this was a charming read. the tone and voice of the narration sounds like a proper Regemcy classic, which was really interesting, especially with the added whimsy of magic. i like the more philosophical/scientific take on magic, especially the link to the Fairy Court (although i wish it could’ve been explored a bit more). however, it feels very slow, and the pacing feel quite irregular. that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it makes the reading experience a bit strange because you never really know what’s going on or how significant it is to the larger plot. speaking of, the plot itself is not the clearest, it feels like a lot is going on but also not? maybe that’s to do with the narration being very verbose and old fashioned? it was a bit difficult taking the story seriously sometimes because it’s honestly… kind of ridiculous at times, especially when there’s a huge battle in the middle of a storm and the characters are throwing paragraphs of text at each other. like… you’re about to die, must you use the most complicated syntax know to man??? overall, pretty fun and a real cool vibe (especially if you’re rewatching bridgerton at the same time)
