Hijab Butch Blues
by Lamya H.
A tenderly and often painfully relatable unpacking of the queer experience and the brown experience. I want my queer friends to read this and my brown family to read this - the kind of memoir that gently describes a life you might not have. We talk about intersectionality all the time but the reality is that being at the intersection of marginalized identities is not just an academic exercise, it's awkward and silly and painful and confusing and shows me different types of joy and beauty at the same time. I'm not Muslim so I liked learning about their interpretations of the Quran and how they sees Islam, and the parallels between the religious stories and their own life.
Fills me with love for the people that love me.
