Simple Passion
by Annie Ernaux
emotional
reflective
fast-paced
This is a very brief book, under 50 pages. you can easily read it in a sitting or listen to it in an hour like I did.
Ernaux has proven to me through this book that obsession is obsession regardless of the object. the flavors are all the same. the isolation, and absolute desperation to escape an intense, all-consuming craving. and meanwhile, the acute need to spend all of one’s time thinking about the object of obsession, luxuriating in it, and enacting the rituals of behavior.
so all of that was beautifully, painfully exposed through perfect prose. the gulf i feel is mainly that Annie Ernaux loves men just entirely more than me. like girl stand UP!!!!!
she essentially only describes her experience and feelings of obsession. we don’t get any glimpse into why she is so enthralled, or honestly what this man is even offering? the few details we get have me like… this guy absolutely sucks. lol. give me a single redeeming quality pleeease.
