I didn’t want to read another series based on the Roman Empire, because I was so tired of Rome. But my students picked this, and I am so thankful. This last book is all I could have asked to end the series. The brutalness of war was not sugarcoated, but hope and redemption were never absent. Empire itself is questioned. The writing is brilliant, the plot is brilliant, the characters are brilliant. I read Heir first, not knowing it was a continuation, and so I knew certain plot points must be true…and I still had no idea how they were going to happen, and was no less interested in following the plot. It’s a truly excellent series.
