May the Road Rise Up to Meet You: A Novel
by Peter Troy
"Knowing you are in the world is knowing that I belong here, that God did not drop me to the earth as a single tear." So glad I stuck with this book - first half was slow going (too much complicated dialect slowed things down and was a distraction)), but the ending was worth the wait. The melting of the characters cultures and backgrounds was woven together superbly. Slave Micah: "He didn't know much about the English or the Irish. They'd always just been white folks to him. Turned out some of them weren't much better to their own kind than they were to colored folks. And that took some time gettin' used to."
I also give the author a lot of credit for being able to write from both gender perspectives flawlessly.
