The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
3.75
Overall Rating: 3.75
This.... was a lot to take in. There was so much happening in this book and that was both a good and bad thing.
I'll start what I didn't like. The info-dumping. I was confused for probably the first few chapters of the book which isn't a good thing. The explanation of the magic system, the characters, the social hierarchy was just too much for my tiny brain to comprehend and I didn't really get it until after Paige was brought to Oxford. I'm not sure is that was the whole point but it made the book a chore to get through. Not to mention, since there was so much going on in this book there were times where it felt a bit stagnant. I felt like the dialogue or the setting was there to simply meet a word count quota and it got boring at times.
Idk if I really have anything to say about the master/servant relationship of Paige and Warden because it was strange. It was obvious Warden had more power but that doesn't mean Paige was powerless... there definitely times where she gathered info for her benefit and used it as well... also considering the romance was a subplot and it didn't really happen till the end of the book I would say the two will be on equal footing which will offside the icky feeling. Also respectfully I also love and hated that kiss scene as Paige and Warden were seconds... SECONDS away from starting the damn rebellion... LIKE BRO SUCK FACE LATER AND GET TO ESCAPING DF?!?! I seriously thought the two of them fucked everything up which made me so mad... cuz if I was apart of that rebellion and it got fucked up because of two stupid horny idiots I'd say "fuck it" and start a riot right then and there....
Now going onto Paige... I honestly really liked her character. She was a rebel from day 1 and did her best to fight against the people who were prejudice against her and people like her. Seeing her go from the "bad pale dreamer" to rebel leader was great. I can't wait to see what she'll do in future books as she fights against the Scion organization and evil Rephaites...
Warden... eh idk what to make of him... seems like an ok guy but the book didn't really give me much of him in terms of personality... I do like how instead of wanting to enslave the clairvoyants he wants to work alongside them to "cleanse" the Either. Hopefully more Rephaites are like him and we'll see more of the political side of Scion's London start to change.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read the next book.
p.s. I WON'T FORGIVE SMANTHA FOR BABY SEB!!! JUSTICE FOR HIM ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
