The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

Beautiful

I can't do this book justice and I was fortunate to read along and listen to its rich prose with the audiobook guiding me through.

Our protagonist is a teenage girl starting high school and starting to develop feeling for boys, especially one in particular. However, her family has strict Catholic morals and they want her to adhere to their religious gospel. It doesn't help when outside church guys of all ages judge her for her already developed body. Her feeling and emotions clash so strongly all she can do is write to express her true self. She writes like she is running out of time, and she might be if her mother ever reads her poetry.

I am without words. This story with its unique prose is guttural and raw and painful. It's impressive how fleshed out each character is with so few words to portray them. The story is everything with its diverse rep and intricate wordplay. Xiomara is the most precious being and I just want to give her a hug. I also want to hug her bother. They both need to know that everything is going to be alright.

Stay safe. Be kind. Show love and acceptance even when you don't agree.
