What an absolutely lovely journey. The first few chapters I had to get into the headspace of the character (1st Person POV) but once we were there WE WERE THERE.
The author has brought Renaissance Venice to life and while war with the Pope is an anxiety in the background, does a wonderful job at creating tension in the slice of life of a nun (who doesn’t want to be a nun in the first place.)
There are some things that I still had a hard time with (Rosa’s age versus innocence versus her choices) though humans are complicated. Also, please remember this is a completely different time with different morals and pressures. Frankly, I think the author did a great job covering religion, class distinction, homosexuality, extramarital affairs with class and care and realistic tone.
I read the second half in one go because of how anxious I was about the plot points set in motion. Quite a few revelations that had me gasping out loud.
SPOILER!!!!!!
The bittersweet ending is realistic and you as the reader are equally understanding/frustrated/disappointed/hopeful for the FMC.
