Untethered by Gloria Bottelman
4.0

Lux Thorn is no stranger to the curious stares and hushed voices that she encounters daily. For the townspeople of Ghadra know her as the mysterious Necromancer, the one who not only saves the dead but reportedly was the very cause of her parents untimely demise. And while Ghadra holds no fond memories for Lux, she has long since given up any dreams of leaving the dark town surrounded by a ghostly marsh and haunting forest. However something has changed. The forest whispers to her, calling her to enter its rotting woods. This unsettling development is also marked by a strange and deadly plague sweeping thru the lower city streets. As Lux begins to investigate the strange occurrence she stubbles upon an unlikely alliance with Shaw, the handsomely aggravating vigilante who blames her for the curse that has seemingly befallen the town. With death now around every corner Lux must decide to fight for the town and its people who condemn her or flee before she to is consumed by its darkness.

Untethered was an atmospheric gothic YA magical mystery. The dark and dreary setting had me intrigued as I’m a huge lover of anything that gives gaslamp Victorian era energy which this book had an abundance of. The pacing while a bit slow in the beginning does pick up with the last quarter including vicious sentient trees and hungry undead. Our FMC goth girl Necromancer Lux served all the moody determination I had hoped for when reading the synopsis. While at times her choices were questionable I reminded myself this is YA and she is 17 which made me give a bit more leeway. The small pinch of romance between our two MCs Lux and Shaw fit right in with the slow burn push and pull known to the gothic romance genre. The mystery aspect was something early on that I did have an inclination of where it was going, however once the reveal was finally upon me I still found myself enjoying the book despite being correct in my assumptions. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book especially the setting and general vibes of the story. As with it being YA I can most definitely say that if I had read this at say 13 I would have been completely enthralled by Untethered’s mystery, magic, haunting setting, and romance and probably made it my whole dark angsty teen identity.
