Perfect on Paper by Sophie Gonzales
5.0
This story follows Darcy Philips, who runs an anonymous relationship advice service for her classmates out of the abandoned Locker 89 — despite her romantic experience more or less extending to being in unrequited love with her best friend Brooke.
When the insufferably hot Alexander Brougham stumbles onto her secret, Darcy agrees to be his personal dating coach to get his ex back in exchange for him keeping quiet. Because if her classmates find out she’s behind the locker, Brooke might never speak to her again …
The plot of this book was super propulsive, and I had a hard time putting it down! I found the ending a bit anticlimactic, but that’s a relatively small quibble. It’s a veritable rollercoaster of a rom-com that gave me tons of feels!
I loved how complex the characters are, especially Darcy. She’s made some super horrible decisions, and has a lot of making up to do over the course of the story. She also struggles with the fear that people won’t see her as “queer enough” as a bi girl thinking about dating a guy, which is met with a wonderfully affirming chapter toward the end that yeets bad biphobic vibes into the sun!
Also, several of the chapters open with Darcy’s responses to people’s relationship problems, which was super fun and also contained some great life advice :D
Overall, if you’re looking for a gripping, romantic, feel-good read, you HAVE to check this out!
CWs: Biphobia, alcohol abuse, drug use, emesis, cheating, emotional abuse, bullying, manipulation.
