“The terrain of childhood shapes the soul, and the soul never forgets.” I mean, fuuuuck. If that doesn’t make you seriously reflect on some things… If I had to sum up this book in one word, it would be introspection. Weird, I know. Not the word I would have thought to use going into it. But damn if this book didn’t make me think long and hard about a number of dark things. It seriously provoked a lot more introspection than I ever could have anticipated.
I really enjoyed Raina’s character, especially because she was soooo far from what I expected her to be. She’s a brutally honest portrayal of the lengths that a woman will go to in order to provide for and protect her family. It came with the stark realization that I would have done the exact same thing in her position and wow did that take my mind to some fucked up places for a bit.
Lorne was everything I wanted him to be. We get glimpses of who he is in the previous books and I was really happy with his character arc. I especially liked the deep dive we were able to take into the emotion that a man in his position has to go through when being reintroduced to the “real world”. It was surprisingly eye opening and had me pondering things I’ve never even thought about before.
This was honestly the perfect ending to the series and everything tied together in a way that left me all warm and fuzzy with a nice dose of appeasing my need for retribution lol. All of these characters went through absolute hell at the hands of the people who should have protected them the most as children and to witness them come out the other side in the way they did was pure, beautiful, vindictive justice. The relationship that all of the characters have and end up having with each other and the way their arcs develop and work together was so impeccable. You can easily tell how much thought Pam gives to her characters because it shows in every single book she writes.
Not only would I recommend this book, you need to read the entire series! Buuut they’re not for the faint of heart, so please for the love of God, read the trigger warnings!
