Based on the hype this book has, I went in with an expectation that this would be “more”…

Don’t get me wrong the book is still good and I enjoyed it but it wasn’t amazing.

I felt I dragged reading it as I couldn’t remain fully focused reading it and it took me longer than books that are almost 200 pages more.

The main reason this book felt short was due to 3 things.

The first and second being very connected and mostly centred around Aren… whist the book is told from his point of view as well I didn’t feel much for him as a character. He was just bland and meh and I didn’t really understand how he went from hating Lara to being in love with her. Yes there was a “main event” that triggered the change but instead of it being shown to the reader we just have “months/weeks pass” and in this time we just need to believe the characters grew closer. He is also too trusting from the start and immediately puts Lara before his country and friends and chooses her when she is the daughter of his enemy.

The third reason was I think because of the length of the book, the world building was short changed. Whist it still sets the scene adequately it could have been delved into a little deeper.

The ending of the book does exponentially push the book up in enjoyment factor even though through actions in the book, you know it’s coming. It still entices “nail biting” feelings and means I’ll immediately pick up the next book.
