Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood by Danny Trejo

3.0

Listening to this book was a hard go. Although Danny Trejo is an amazing, prolific actor, his reading of the story was very halting. I found speeding up the playback to 1.5X made a huge difference.

The story itself is amazing. Mr. Trejo’s story is full of tragedy and hope. There is no doubt that He has a great and deep belief in God. But he is such a pragmatist about it. He really never seemed to use his own beliefs to guilt people into rehab. And let’s talk about his work in rehab. Through all the years he was working in movies, Danny Trejo was also working for various Rehab facilities in California. He was on the streets working as an intake counselor. He was also going into schools and facilities to talk to so many people about drugs and alcohol. For me that was the most amazing aspect of his life. He was also dedicated to recovery and seemed to attend meetings regularly.

As someone who was touched multiple times by alcohol and drug abuse in my family, I know about “working the steps” and the struggle for recovery. The thing with recovery is everyday sober is a victory, but that means every morning is a new battle and temptation lessons but doesn’t necessarily go away. Mr. Trejo’s continued victory is what makes him a star for me.
