Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay

dark emotional reflective sad medium-paced

5.0

WOW, 5 ⭐️ alert!!!!!! This memoir will stay with me for the rest of my life. I have heard about Roxane Gay (and love following her on Goodreads, where she gives incredibly detailed reviews) but haven’t read any of her books prior to this. I listened to her narrate this memoir and I look forward to her other works.

Gay’s memoir is an incredibly vulnerable and powerful examination of life in her body. She chronicles her obesity, how others treat her, the guilt and judgement she places on herself, and the horrible tragedy that in her youth that changed her.

The way Gay writes is extraordinary. She’s not self pitying or blaming, she’s not wallowing….shes open and honest, living in her truth of being unhappy in her body while also exploring our society’s condemnation of obesity. I love memoirs and this will remain one of the most powerful I’ve ever read.
