Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover

3.0

Like every Colleen Hoover book... I have no idea how to feel about this one. I loved and hated it so much but I think I loved it more than I hated it, which is saying something. There is something very addictive about the way Colleen Hoover writes which I know is nothing new, everyone who likes her books attests to the same thing.

NON SPOILER REVIEW: I honestly like this book and as someone who prefers closed door romances, the smut (which is not a spoiler, it's a coho book, it's gonna have that) the scenes are easy to skip over without missing a lot of context. The dynamic between Kenna and Ledger is just as good and addictive as other coho romances but what stuck out is the relationship between Ledger and Diem. That's what kept me going and what I feel like really sets this book apart is the love Ledger has for Diem and the conflict between bringing justice to the woman he loves while keeping Diem safe. The conflict is creative and you could make good arguments for both sides, which in a romance is rare, but it propelled the book forward. There were some moments that absolutely irked me but those are spoilers so...

SPOILER REVIEW: Kay so now that I just complimented the book, I'm gonna stand by what I said but oh my gosh there were some things that made me mad. 1. They have sex right after the most vulnerable, heart breaking, and (personally) most anticipated moment in the book, when Kenna reads the letter describing the wreck/her being questioned by the police. It felt like such a genuinely heartbreaking moment and one that they really could have just discussed and sat with for a moment but no. Ledger goes outside and breaks some stuff and then they bone. Like... okay. I know saying a coho book ruined a good moment with sex is NOT new news, but this one really rubbed me the wrong way. Oh and before Kenna first had sex with her dead boyfriend's best friend, she goes, "I am so sorry Scotty... but not sorry enough to stop it." I'M SORRY? EW? The SELFISHNESS? Like was that line supposed to be funny or show "woman power" or something because that was just disgusting. Also when she's writing to her again, dead boyfriend, about how much more she wanted to touch his best friend? Bestie, you're telling your deceased boyfriend about your sex life with his best friend? Keep it in the drafts. But going back to the good things, I love when Ledger says, "I am going to be the best person I can be for your daughter... I'll make sure she grows up knowing how much you loved her." oh my gosh my heart- Ledger really is one of the best coho boys, fluffy brown hair and tattoo basic as he may be, he's a really stand up guy. And the small things like Kenna turning on music in the car at the end, Ledger noticing the ways Diem resembles Kenna, the well-developed and complex conflict, the fact that the second song on Kenna's playlist was 'Dynamite' by BTS, it all added up to make a really compelling story.
