Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur

Rupi Kaur is probably the emblem of IG / Tumblr poetry. The line art is simple simple, the poems strike as trite aphorisms or even a random sentence that Kaur just decided to cut up into a 5-6 line poem. So some are genuinely BAD bad. But a few others... it's a hit straight to the id. It helps that she writes about such universal female experiences here: childhood trauma, falling in love / lust, break-ups, getting over someone and rediscovering yourself. Everyone's had the experience, for example, of breaking up with someone and feeling like they'd had a total personality change. And so even with the bad poems, there's this sense of recognition to see that subject - something so anxious and mundane and feminine it's rarely been represented in poetry -  on the page. Your heart just goes, "Oh, it's me," with a thud. Kaur's persona and voice is "wise" and "compassionate" and "dreamy" in the same way a tarot card reader is. And just as self-conscious. We're both in on the scam, but as long as we don't look at it directly, it can be effective.
