Consider R.F. Kuang my wife, consider us married. Rebecca come home, the kids miss you. :(

I am so heartbroken and enamored with this first book. The only thing that tripped me up was the passage of time in the middle of this book, but if it weren't for it, this book would've been 500 pages longer. Between the characters, the politics, the world, the mythology?? Color me obsessed, I am already reaching for the next book.

I saw a review saying Fang Runin was "conveniently overpowered and good at everything" sort of main character. To that I say: did we even read the same book? My girl was in the trenches for a good 90% of the book, whether she was burning herself so she could test into this academy or was being man handled by a few pieces of meat. She earned and worked for her position at the end of the book and if you can't see that, you may have to open your eyes next time you pick up a book.

Another thing I so desperately love about this book is the character relationships! The relationship between Rin and Nezha pre and post war, the complexity between Rin and Altan (Altan 😓), master vs commander, the found family, KITAY. Agh, don't get me started. All of them woven so beautifully.
