The Uncharted Flight of Olivia West
by Sara Ackerman
5/5 ⭐️

In 1927, Olivia West was determined to become a pilot. She tries to qualify for the Dole Air Race, a 2,400-mile competition flying from the West Coast to Hawaii. However, she is rejected simply because she is a woman. Instead, she agrees to fly alongside Felix Harding as his navigator.

In 1987, Wren Summers inherits some land on the Big Island, complete with a decrepit barn and overgrown vegetation. Initially, she plans to sell the Hawaiian land to make some money and get back on her feet. However, Wren changes her mind when she discovers two old planes in the barn that her late great-aunt had kept. Intrigued, Wren becomes determined to uncover the history of these planes. What she uncovers is more groundbreaking and closer to home than she could have ever imagined.

The Uncharted Flight of Olivia West was such a surprise! It’s a great story about girl power, bravery, and perseverance. Both Olivia and Wren were strong female characters with a lot of courage. Olivia showed how women of that time had to overcome challenges to pursue their dreams. The book is full of adventure and action, with a perfect mix of aviation terms and a personal storyline. It also includes real historical events and Hawaiian culture, so I learned a lot from it. I highly recommend this book, especially if you’re planning a trip to Hawaii.
