Cloaked in Red by Vivian Vande Velde
2.0

I LOVE Vivian Vande Velde. LOVE.

So I was very disappointed with this collection. Like [b:The Rumpelstiltskin Problem|11206014|The Rumpelstiltskin Problem|Vivian Vande Velde|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/416ZgBUu1dL._SL75_.jpg|2845551], it is multiple retellings of one fairy tale (in this case, Little Red Riding Hood). The Rumpelstiltskin Problem, however, was anchored by one very strong retelling that actually had some romance and tension. This collection reads more like a writing workshop exercise where you had to do something with a “grandmother” a “woodcutter” a “little girl” and a “red cloak”. Shuffle these pieces in whatever order you like, and write. VVV complains about the original tale’s lack of character depth, but these stories only gave the barest hint of any character.

I found them tiresome, which is not something that I want to say about anything VVV wrote.
