Lucky You by Carl Hiaasen
3.0

This was another book club selection. It was selected as a light read to follow "Tortilla Curtain" by T.C. Boyle. "Lucky You" follows two people/groups that win the lottery: a black woman (Jolayne Lucks) and two white bigots. The two men find Jolayne and take her winning ticket from her so they can have the whole jackpot. There wasn't a whole lot to discuss in the club. The book isn't very deep and doesn't pose too many questions. Some of my fellow book clubbers found it very difficult to read the parts that focused on the two white supremacists. I didn't find these parts as difficult to read because Hiaasen is obviously portraying them as odious characters to be hated.

There were some fun and crazy characters. Most of them reside in Jolayne's hometown of Grange, Florida. It's the miracle capital of the U.S. Such sights to be seen are a man with stigmata and a crying virgin Mary statue. The dialogue and humor in the book are fun. Jolayne and the reporter who helps her track down the guys who stole her ticket are an interesting match.

This book is good for a fun, fast read.
