The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie
2.0

Rating: ★★.75

I’ll start off by saying that I (obviously) did not enjoy this book very much. Why? I prefer more action in the fantasy novels I read. I also like to understand what I’m reading and have a grasp of what is happening. The Raven Tower didn’t have that in my opinion. Was it The Worst™? No. I’m sure there’s an audience for this book but I wasn’t part of it unfortunately.

The pacing of the book was incredibly slow. Halfway through I was still waiting for SOMETHING to happen. Only when I was around 60% through the ebook did it pick up and did I get some damn answers. For the majority of the book I was in the dark about what The Raven Tower was actually about. I’m not saying that the plot wasn’t smart or unique. It’s just that I didn’t understand any of it until the very last page.

This book is told from alternating perspectives. There’s the second-person narrative which I found highly confusing sometimes and the first-person narrative. Both told from the same narrator: the Strength and Patience of the Hill aka a god in the form of a stone. This basically means that in some paragraphs this god is talking to you and narrates what you are doing and possibly thinking (you are supposed to be the character Eolo). In the other paragraphs it’s the god talking about his own life and his ponderings. These were my least favorite parts because I found them straight up boring.

As for the characters themselves I wasn’t particularly fond of any of them. They were all very bland and I feel like I’ve already forgotten half of them. They didn’t have any depth to them and as the reader you don’t learn anything about them. I can’t even remember getting a description of what they were supposed to look like (that might be on me though).

I had high expectations of The Raven Tower and went in very excited. I’m disappointed I didn’t enjoy it as much as I had hoped I would. Onto the next one I guess.
