This book broke me in a healing way. The themes of not being able to return home really hit me hard. I felt that. The writing was beautiful as with all of Akwaeke's books, but this one being so steeped in Nigerian culture was different from their books but done so well. I think Akwaeke does such an amazing job of writing to a young adult audience. YA can be raw and dark without harming readers. I think I like Akwaeke's YA catalogue a bit more than their adult catalogue, but it's not much because all their books are on my favorites list since they are my favorite author.
