I have a love/hate relationship with Frieda. Sometimes I absolutely eat her books up, and other times I’m thinking “what am I reading?!” This was a mix of both. It was so entertaining but the characters were unlikable and the dialogue was a little cringy. The main character’s obsession with shoes was honestly laughable and kinda took me out of the story because how on earth does a high school teacher - married to another high school teacher - afford multiple pairs of Louboutins and Jimmy Choos? And sure, some were gifted, but really? And you’re gonna wear these stilettos to teach in all day at school?!? That was the most unrealistic part for me as a former teacher.
I found a lot of the bullying totally unbelievable as well. No teacher would receive soaking wet homework from a student clearly in distress wearing a gross PE uniform and not ask questions. She obviously didn’t mean to get the paper wet?! And she would not choose to wear those clothes?! Come on. Just ASK her! And Addie, TELL A TEACHER. Seriously?!
And the twist at the end? WHAT?! That honestly made everything so much weirder and made the book make even less sense. I tried going back and seeing how it all fit and honestly, it didn’t.
HOWEVER, I couldn’t stop reading this book. I had to know what would happen next and it was truly thrilling. Just so many questions!
