Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Vol. 1: Dawn by Yoshiki Tanaka

3.0

I can't tell if it's a product of the translation or the original writing, but the writing style fluctuates rapidly throughout the whole book. For some parts, it's written like a character based narrative, and for others it changes to the voice-of-god type historical narration, sometimes even within the same paragraph.

Having already seen the show (both old and new), I can say this switching is pulled off much better in those. Having a literal historian as the voice-of-god narrator inserting himself into the episodes makes a lot more sense than the author just taking asides. It also doesn't seem to have a good grasp of when to switch between these two modes: If the capture of Iserlohn section had been written like the battle of Amritsar, I may not have had these complaints. The show seems to have a much better idea about when to switch between them.

The quality of writing did seem to generally improve over the course of the book, and maybe it gets better in the next novel. If it continues in this fashion I'm probably going to drop the series, though, since I've already seen the story portrayed in a much better way.
