Changes by Jim Butcher
5.0

5 stars, with caveat. Butcher is my favorite popcorn author. I know that if I pick up a Dresden book, I'd better be setting aside the day to read it. This book was no exception. It was like riding a runaway train. You know those books that you have to make yourself decide on a chapter to stop at temporarily so you can get up to feed the cat, feed yourself, etc? Check.
Harry's motivation in this book was saving his little girl. I had a bit of a problem with this motivation, since he's never met her and didn't know about her until the first sentence of Changes. I'm not a parent, and I just don't get that kind of unthought love. Therefore, I felt the motivator was a bit of a cheat. I feel like this for all books where the motivation is "save the kid!" I want something more subtle, where there isn't some unspoken agreement that this motivation is paramount, of course, and anything is permissible to achieve the rescue, of course. That's my caveat.
Harry has compromised some of his long-standing principles. I'm curious to see where Butcher will take the character next. Didn't like the cliffhanger ending. Please don't do that again, Mr. Butcher.
