I read this during the summer of 2020, and it was not an easy read at that time. Saramago got more right than was comfortable. He writes with a very sociological kind of style, which I love about his work, though I'm sure some might find it dry. It won't make you feel better, but "Blindness" is an unflinching mirror and is, in my view, worth the effort.
