Covet
by J.R. Ward
This was boring as fuck and 150 pages too long.
The only things I enjoyed were the cameos from characters in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Nothing about these characters, the romance, or the world interested me. The story meanders for 350 pages before you finally get a sense of who these characters are, how they fit together, and what the plot even is. It’s a big ol boring mess, even as far as introductory first books go.
I also note that there is some hideously outdated and offensive language about sex workers all throughout the book (the love interest is a sex worker). That being said, this was published over 10 years ago and I don’t recall the same sort of stuff permeating Ward’s more recent novels. I was simultaneously irritated and also took it with a grain of salt as not ageing well.
I’ll give the second book a go as I’m a BDB stan, but I’m setting expectations low. This was such a disappointment and I’d rather watch Supernatural.
