Hitchman sets scenes with an impressionist’s attention to background detail!!! She is depicting a rainbow’s entire ultraviolence high and clear across these wonderful characters’ lives. I loved the love, hated the hurt, related to the desire to simply live the life the heart wants, and melted at the grandeur theme of connection and community. The historical context of 1914-1946’s Austria only made the narration more alive, and the anecdotes of struggle and war-hustle more real.
