Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

challenging dark emotional funny reflective sad tense fast-paced

This memoir got so many rave reviews when it came out, so I was always curious about picking it up. I found it really interesting that this memoir was so focused on one certain time period of the authors' life versus being a life-long chronicle of their experiences since childhood. However, Zauner did a really great job at bringing in certain moments from her childhood or adolescence that related to moments or feelings she had about her current situation with her mother battling cancer. The writing is so strong in this book, between the descriptions of all the Koren food, locations Zauner has lived in or traveled to, the raw emotions she feels, and even the moments of losing her mother the audience is constantly being moved by it all. It is a hard, heavy book to read at times, but also beautiful and impactful.
