this was a beautifully written, from-the-heart, funny-sad memoir by a woman horribly abused by her mother, exploited by hollywood, and wracked by eating disorders and alcohol abuse, but who comes out the other side with an lovely story of recovery and healing. the vast majority of the book is about her trauma, but you see her beginning to heal towards the end. the sheer honesty in this incredibly witty book is refreshing. jennette mccurdy pulls no punches, and she doesn’t especially care how she represents herself and others beyond it being truthful. we all know child stardom is a black hole, but it’s still so confronting to read a first-hand account of how earth-shattering and traumatic it can be.
mccurdy’s relationship with her mother is the crux of the book, and the forthright, unapologetic title, i’m glad my mum died, is exactly what you should expect from the book. mccurdy has an incredible talent for writing, and you can’t help but feel proud of her ability to extricate herself from her mother and her expectations, and to forge a career that is completely her own. the book is never bogged down in various traumas it explores, moving at a sharp pace throughout her life as it has been so far. it shows such strength of character for mccurdy to write this book, and i hope that it’s a positive, important part of her journey of recovering.
