It was a rocky start and I didn't think this was going to be for me at first, but I had seen this book on every Waterstones shop front as their '2019 essentials' and was on the 'Man Booker Prize 2018' list. I needed to see what the fuss was about.

After the first few chapters I felt transported into the lives of Marianne and Connell's complicated story. I wouldn't say this book was a romance, more of a contemporary, but it does explore what it is to be young and in love, of the implications a person has on our perceived social standing. As the story goes on I could not help but feel their relationship was going to end in doom but also enthralled at their pairing again and again along their path to adulthood that I put down to fate. These two people couldn't be more different but at the same time they are so obviously meant to be be together, and I was left feeling frustration when every time there would be something in the way of this happening.

This book has been such a success because its so profusely relatable! In no way do I think this will be loved by all and without a doubt there will be those that will not think it worth their time. I have to say there is a lot of sex from start to finish, but in my opinion these parts are a necessity and only builds on the two main characters authenticity. I urge all to read this as I have a feeling it will be talked about for a long time to come.
