Rory, a young adult living in the big city, returns home to a town she thought she had left behind so she can support her sister during her pregnancy. Things take a turn for the…weird, when on the way home from the bar she hits a large animal with her car and is subsequently attacked, thinking it’s a bear. Miraculously, she survives the attack! But she starts to notice odd changes within herself: an aversion to silver, super fast healing, and an attraction to the moon. As she realizes she is turning into what she believes is a monster, will she be able to balance everything going on in her life with her out of control body?
I honestly loved this. I don’t get too enthralled by audiobooks, but this one really had me in a chokehold. Honestly, not much for me to hate here. This book embodied feminine rage, put it in a werewolf, and set it loose on a full moon. There was a lot of paralels between Rory and her twin sister Scarlet, which made for some really enjoying juxtaposition when it came to Rory losing control of her body in a monster-sense, and Scarlet losing control of her body in a pregnancy sense. Both girls experiencing some sort of life altering change in their body…albeit in extremely different forms. I was a huge fan of the romance plot in this book, not too overbearing and Ian was a generally likeable guy. Definitely read this if you’re looking for something contemporary and monstrous, but maybe not too scary. Five stars.
Moderate: Body horror, Pregnancy
